Growing up in the Tecumseh Minor Hockey system, Mickey Renaud dreamed of one
day playing for his hometown team, the Windsor Spitfires. His passion for the
game, relentless work ethic, and leadership qualities set him apart from a
young age, making him a role model both on and off the ice.
That dream became reality in 2005 when Mickey suited up for his first game with the Spitfires after being selected in the OHL Priority Draft. He quickly emerged as the heart and soul of a young team, leading future NHL stars like Ryan Ellis, Adam Henrique, and Taylor Hall with his unwavering dedication. His leadership was undeniable, and he was honored as team captain—a role he embraced with maturity beyond his years.
Mickey’s talent and character didn’t go unnoticed. In 2007, the Calgary Flames selected him in the 5th round of the NHL Draft, and it seemed he was destined to follow in the footsteps of his father, Mark Renaud, who played in the NHL. But on February 18, 2008, tragedy struck. Mickey suddenly collapsed at home and passed away from a rare heart condition, leaving the hockey world in shock.
While his life was tragically cut short, his legacy continues to inspire young athletes to this day. The Windsor Spitfires dedicated their 2008-09 season to their fallen captain, winning the OHL Championship and their first-ever Memorial Cup. They repeated the feat the following season, fueled by the memory of Mickey’s leadership and spirit. His jersey remained on the bench and in the dressing room, a powerful reminder of his enduring presence.
Mickey’s influence extends far beyond his playing days. His passion and commitment to the game live on through the annual U9 Mickey Renaud Memorial Tournament, a showcase of young talent that embodies the values he stood for—hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship. This tournament is more than just a competition; it’s a celebration of a young man who gave everything to the sport and inspired those around him.
For young hockey players, Mickey Renaud’s story is a testament to the impact one person can have on a team, a community, and an entire sport. His memory serves as a reminder that hockey is about more than just wins and losses—it’s about character, leadership, and leaving a lasting impression on those who follow in your footsteps.
As young players lace up their skates and hit the ice, they carry a piece of Mickey’s spirit with them, striving to match his dedication and passion. His story continues to inspire, proving that a true leader’s impact never fades.
